The Monthly Payroll Process
Every month, payroll flows from the employee’s phone through your approval and into paid salaries and filed reports. Here’s how a typical cycle runs.1
Employees confirm their hours
The hours are already there: Rise pre-fills them from the employment contract. The employee confirms the month and logs only what differs from the contract. Holidays and sick days are already included if they were reported during the month.
2
Manager approves the timesheets
The manager reviews the submitted hours, holidays, and sick days in the app and approves them. Any corrections happen at this step, before payroll is calculated.
3
Payroll is calculated
Rise calculates gross-to-net salary for each employee, applying tax withholding, employer contributions, and any adjustments from the approved timesheets. Your accountant team reviews the run before it’s finalized.
4
Payslips reach employees
Once payroll is approved, Rise initiates salary payments to employee bank accounts and sends each employee their payslip by email.
Hours, Holidays, and Absences
The heaviest part of payroll is usually collecting hours and absences. Rise turns that around: the working time in the employment contract is the default, and the employee logs only what differs from it.Hours from the contract
Rise pre-fills hours from the working time recorded in the employment contract. For a salaried employee whose hours don’t vary, there is nothing to log — the hours are already there and the employee simply confirms them.
The whole month in one go
Hours don’t have to be logged day by day. An employee can report the whole month’s hours as a single entry when a day-level breakdown isn’t needed.
Holiday requests
An employee requests leave in the app: pick the days, send the request. The manager gets a notification and approves or rejects it in the app — the same way as any other approval, with no emails and no separate leave form. Approved leave flows straight into payroll. It does not need to be logged again with the month’s hours.Sick days
Sick days are reported in the app the same way as holidays. The report is visible to the manager immediately, and the days flow into payroll correctly handled, with no separate notice to a payroll clerk. What Rise Files Automatically
Rise takes care of every recurring payroll filing on your behalf. You don’t need to log in to any government portal or prepare reports manually.Income Tax Reports
Employee tax withholding is reported to the tax authority each pay period, on time and in the correct format.
Employer Contributions
Pension, social security, and insurance contributions are calculated and filed based on the applicable rates for your employees.
Annual Payroll Summary
Year-end employee income statements are prepared and submitted to the tax authority, with copies sent to each employee.
Payslips
Professional payslips are generated for each employee after every payroll run and sent to them automatically by email.
How Payslips Are Delivered
Employees receive their payslip by email after every payroll run. If an employee needs a copy of a historical payslip, for a mortgage application for example, your accountant team will provide it on request.Payroll regulations vary by country. Rise currently supports payroll for Finland-registered companies. If your company is registered in another Nordic country, contact your accountant team through the app for current availability.
Making Changes Mid-Month
If you need to correct a payroll entry or add a bonus after the payroll run has already been approved, contact your accountant team directly through the Rise app. They’ll handle the adjustment and any re-filing required with the tax authority, with no action needed on your end beyond describing the change.Setting Up Payroll
Set up payroll once when you add your first employee. After that, the monthly process above runs on its own.1
Open the Payroll section
Go to Payroll in the Rise app.
2
Invite employees
Invite each employee by entering their name, personal ID, bank account number, start date, and agreed gross salary. Each employee receives an invitation to download the Rise app.
3
Set payroll frequency
Choose how often you run payroll. Monthly is the standard in the Nordics, and Rise defaults to this automatically.
4
Review the first calculation
Rise calculates employer contributions, employee tax withholding, and net pay for each employee. Review the breakdown before approving your first run.
