Rise calculates VAT on every transaction as it is posted. When a reporting period ends, your Rise accountant prepares the VAT return and files it with the tax authority. There is nothing for you to do here.

Reporting periods and deadlines

Most companies report monthly. Smaller companies can often apply for a longer period. The period lengths and filing deadlines depend on the country where your company is registered. Your accounting team confirms both during onboarding.

How the return is prepared

1

The AI picks the VAT treatment

Rise picks the VAT rate from the supplier, the expense category and your VAT registration. You set no tax codes.
2

The accounting team reviews the period

The licensed accounting team checks the period. They handle the cases that need professional judgement.
3

The accountant prepares and files the return

Your Rise accountant prepares the VAT return and files it with the tax authority by the deadline.
The period’s VAT also appears on the VAT report, with collected and deductible VAT itemised. → Reporting

When a receipt arrives late

VAT is deducted in the period the receipt belongs to. If the receipt turns up later, Rise takes the deduction when the receipt arrives. Your figures and cash forecast stay current in the meantime. This is why a receipt is best captured the moment it exists — at the till, at the restaurant, in the taxi. → Receipts

When an accountant steps in

Some VAT treatment needs human judgement: cross-border sales, reverse charge, partly deductible costs and unusual transactions. The accounting team reviews these before the return is filed. If they need something from you, they ask in the chat. → Accounting team
